For me it's a toss-up with either Eddie, Ivan or Peter. If we're counting the novels and comics though, then Ice from The Hangman and Hopewell from The Gods Of Hell are easily my most hated (if you've read those books you'll know exactly what I mean).

As far as the first movie goes, I don't think I really hated any of the characters, but I guess you could say I hated how some weren't used to their full potential. That can sometimes make an otherwise good character annoying, just because you want more of him/her and don't get it. Take Durant's gang, for instance. There was reasonable potential there. Durant himself was fairly charismatic for a villain (some cool lines/attitude/etc), so why not flesh out his henchmen a bit more? As you can probably tell from my name, I thought Smiley was a really neat character, namely for his messed up sense of humor in not-so-funny situations. He's the crazy one of the bunch, which usually gets more attention in the script than he did. If I remember correctly, he only had one line, and didn't appear in all that many scenes. Some of the other members were kind of ill-elaborated, too. So, my only problems with the different personas were that too much was left to the imagination (then again, that can be half the fun). Oh, and dare I say, Westlake/Darkman himself seemed at times a bit too melodramatic and whiny, but I guess he went through quite alot. Not to mention, his name is DARKman, not Happyman. *shrugs* Oh well.

I agree that Smiley was underdeveloped, I always thought he was Durant's most interesting henchman and it was disappointing he didn't get a bigger part. At least he got some great scenes though, and in my opinion he got the best scene with Darkman wearing the Smiley mask.
